Facebook, Microsoft, Mastercard, Uber, Nintendo, Google, Reddit, Sony, and Gmail – all of these companies have suffered from so-called data breaches in recent years. This means that huge amounts of confidential data were leaked to the outside world due to hacking attacks or vulnerabilities in company databases. Such data was often sold on the internet or misused in other ways. While these large-scale breaches may seem distant from our everyday lives, even in smaller work contexts or on private laptops, sensitive data can be compromised through hacking attacks, fraudulent emails, or security incidents at larger companies to which we – consciously or unconsciously – entrust our information.
That is why the protection of data is a valuable asset, both in private and professional contexts. In particular, work environments often involve the handling of confidential data that requires special care. Protecting the digital workspace – regardless of the size of an organization – is therefore especially important. This raises practical questions such as: How should I store confidential data in a professional context? Which data should I back up, and how? How do I communicate securely with colleagues? To whom am I potentially giving important data when I collaborate digitally? Which programs and services does my employer use, and how secure are they in terms of data protection? How do I manage my passwords in both work and private settings?
While many of these answers should be provided by the employer, it is the responsibility of employees to ensure that the measures are implemented correctly. This makes it particularly important to raise general awareness of these issues and to involve all members of an organization. Only then can employees not only understand and follow the company’s data protection concept but also accept and adapt to changes in work processes with understanding.
This module addresses the protection of the digital work environment by providing information on various topics. Participants acquire practical knowledge about procedures, programs, and potential security gaps through interactive exercises and their own research. A special focus is placed on balancing functionality and security.

4.1 Protecting the digital work environment
Protecting digital devices and environments and understanding risks and threats. Knowing about measures that protect your own privacy and security.
Privacy arcades
The aim of this task is for participants to engage with the potential security risks of a digital work environment in a playful way. They also discover ways to protect themselves against these risks.
Pitch me my security
In this task, participants learn to evaluate various methods for protecting the digital work environment in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. They also acquire the ability to pass on the knowledge they have learned to others.
4.2 Protecting personal data and privacy
Protecting personal data and privacy in digital environments. Understanding how to use and share personal information without harming yourself or others. Understanding the privacy settings and policies of digital services.
Seahorses: Digital self-defense
In this task, participants explore key aspects of data protection, privacy, and their own handling of personal data. The aim of this exercise is to raise awareness of data protection issues, learn practical strategies, and plan concrete measures for active digital self-defense.
Hurray, the world is coming to an end!?
The aim of this task is for participants to engage with key issues surrounding data protection at a societal level. They develop an awareness of privacy as a political issue and take a creative approach to utopian and dystopian futures for data.
4.3 Protecting health and well-being
Avoiding physical and mental health risks when using digital technologies. Protecting oneself from potential dangers that may arise in digital environments. Knowing how to use digital technologies for one’s own well-being and to contribute to social inclusion.
The internet and me – a relationship crisis?
The aim of this task is for participants to become aware of their own relationship with smartphones and the internet and to learn about concepts that can help them actively shape this relationship in a positive way.
Misfortune does not design itself
The aim of the task is to make participants aware that digital offerings are often designed to capture their attention. Participants learn to understand the logic of the attention economy and work together to develop individual and societal ways of resisting it.
4.4 Environmental protection & digitalization
Being aware of the impact of digital technologies on the environment.
Family, freedom, and digital sustainability
The aim of this task is to make participants aware of the impact their everyday digital lives have on the environment and climate. Together, they also develop practical ways to reduce their own digital carbon footprint.
Election campaign: Digital and sustainable – but how?
The aim of this task is for participants to engage with social issues relating to digitalization and sustainability. In doing so, they develop their own visions for a sustainable digital future.
