How are girls and women represented in the media?

Media Mindful is a challenge pack to help equip young people and youth workers with the skills needed to analyse how girls and women are represented in the media.

This pack has been designed for girls by girls – led by Girlguiding Scotland’s Speak Out Champions – and reflects a key issue that girls and young women face.

Research shows that as girls get older their happiness declines. Many feel pressured to look a certain way or worry about what others think of them. Girls and young women tell us that a lot of this comes from the media – whether that’s newspapers, magazines, TV shows, adverts or social media – it’s having an impact on their mental health. Something needs to change!
