Procedure

This task consists of four parts.

In the first part, participants form small groups of 2–3 people and draw a culture slip (training material 2) from a lottery box. On it, they will find the name of the digital culture, a brief description, some prompts for researching the culture, and a small task. The participants then conduct an internet search on their respective culture. They should answer the following questions in relation to the profile (part two):

• How would you describe this culture to someone outside of it?
• What is special/unique about this culture?
• Can it also be imagined in analog form? If not, why not?
• Which groups of people are part of this culture?
• Where on the internet does this culture take place?
• Did the culture exist for a short time or has it been around for a long time?
• Were there any special events that emerged from this culture?

In the second part, participants collect and report their research results within their small groups. They then discuss the task on their culture sheet.

In the third part, participants create a flipchart about their digital culture in the form of a profile. A suggestion for this can be found in training material 1.

The fourth part consists of a gallery walk in which participants look at the profiles of the other groups. It is a good idea for the group to take turns choosing a person to stand in front of each profile and answer questions and provide useful information.

Preparation

• Training material 2 must be printed out and cut to size, then the culture sheets should be folded and placed in a lottery pot.
• One profile flipchart should be available for each small group.

Notes on moderation

• To gain an understanding of what we mean by the term “digital cultures,” it is worth reading the thematic introduction for Module 6.1 “Digital Cultures”, which is currently in preparation.
• Caution is advised when discussing Vtubers, 4Chan, VRChat, and Reddit. Participants’ internet searches should be set to a content-filtering search such as Google’s “Safe Search.” In addition, a content warning (content notification) should be given for sexual and unconstitutional content (e.g., racism, hate speech, etc.).

Extension

• The task can be expanded to include any number of other, perhaps more current cultures of digitality. Additional questions can also be provided for the small groups to work on and discuss.
