The aim of this task is for participants to engage with key issues surrounding data protection at a societal level. They will develop an awareness of privacy as a political issue and take a creative approach to utopian and dystopian visions of the future of data.

Procedure
This task consists of two parts.
The first part consists of a fishbowl discussion accompanied by a digital Kahoot quiz. The six topics from training material 1 are discussed. Two participants per topic sit in the fishbowl and represent an (extreme) point of view. There is also an empty seat for participants from the audience who can join the discussion.
Before the discussion begins, participants can be given time to prepare their positions. However, the focus of this task should not be so much on the completeness of the discussions, but rather on an exchange and understanding of the positions. Controversial statements can therefore be left open and clarified at the end of the exercise.
During the discussion, the two questions on positioning are asked. After each topic, the two discussants are switched so that as many participants as possible sit in the fishbowl. The discussion is introduced by the moderator and accompanied throughout by asking questions on the topics and involving the participants watching via the Kahoot quiz. The Kahoot quiz can be used to gauge the mood or to formulate statements that can be read out by the moderator.
In the second part of this exercise, participants draft utopian and dystopian visions of the future. To give them some guidance, basic elements of the stories are provided (training material 2). At the end, the future scenarios are presented and discussed in a plenary session or in small groups.
Preparation
- The content of the fishbowl discussion in the first part should be prepared in such a way that further input can be provided during the discussion if necessary. Depending on the needs and prior knowledge of the participants, a short input can be prepared in advance for each topic.
- Training material 1 can be easily expanded to include new topics or other controversial statements relating to current developments in these areas.
Notes on moderation
- The positioning questions are deliberately controversial so that the discussions are as fruitful as possible. Skilful follow-up questions, perhaps also from participants in the free space, can further stimulate the debate and make it more exciting.
